What are the Songs of Mara and the Mothers within Her? Who are Her daughters and what are Her colors? Where is her church and how does one call Her? Latvian culture possesses a living oral tradition of a million and a quarter prose poem/songs that honor a diverse and ancient Indo European cosmology. This concrete mythological record is still the basis for contemporary Latvian identity. Among traditional Latvians the Goddess Mara, the Mother of the Earth, is still honored and Her songs are still sung. The Naming of Mara offers in a non-didactic way an introduction to the complexities of Mara while exploring Her roles within a living culture. The presentation hopes to widen and in some ways simplify our relationship of honoring and worshiping this Goddess by presenting real cultural contexts of that worship.
